COVID 19, Going Back to School in Norfolk, VA

Diet & Health Shidonna Raven Garden and Cook

While many primary school districts, and secondary schools for that matter, struggle with mixed, hard and fast rules and funding about going back to school, many schools were left scrambling to create systems, training and provide equipment for students on short notice in the wake of a pandemic that still lacks a national plan other than what many medical professionals call an unrealistic time frame for having a vaccine: January 2021. Many medical professionals feel that March 2021 is a more realistic deadline. Amidst all this our elected officials in Norfolk, VA have decided to start 100% online for Norfolk, VA primary schools. Many secondary schools will also be online (in Norfolk, VA). Many schools are hoping to switch back to in person at some point but many of these deadlines remain up in the air as we wade through the pandemic. Our elected officials were prompt in addressing the digital divide that exists by providing chrome books for those families in need, ensuring that students are equipped to go back to school. It was very important to Congressman Bobby Scott that students have chrome books and were equipped to learn this school season during the pandemic.

Don’t get caught off guard. Going Back to School During COVID-19: A SIMPLE GUIDE:

In fact, many teachers instructing primary school students have begun to venture out seeking their own computers. Teachers often are left to supply themselves, their classes and sometimes their students with supplies on their modest salaries. The elected officials in Norfolk, VA had approved teacher raises. In the face of the pandemic they have been put back in a position to fight for this raise for teachers as many states have been left to address the pandemic, in a sense, on their own, although many of our fine states have sought to pull and work together. Make sure your voice is heard this November at the ballot box and contact your local office of election with any questions or concerns. Plan ahead and Vote early!

Colleges across the country are struggling to open and keep students and staff safe from COVID 19 outbreaks. Some schools site the inability to manage how students socialize. The NBA bubble is a shinning example of how an organization has managed to open and function fairly successfully. The question is: are you sending you kids back to school whether they are going to elementary school or college this question is still one that requires some though if you are not sending them back online. Indeed, our society has moved online in larger numbers than before. And who can blame us. Is this the new normal? What will things look like in January or March 2021 when vaccines for corona start to be available hopefully moving us from a pandemic back to normal or a new normal? COVID 19 and Venturing Out

exercise Shidonna Raven Garden and Cook

Indeed COVID 19 made the world stand still in many respects. Many states and many countries started opening back up again a few months ago. The United States was among many. Unlike many other ‘developed’ nations the United States remains the leader in COVID 19 cases. We would like to think of ourselves as global leaders, however, this is not quit what was meant by that. Some were eager to re open as closing contributed to the economic hardship of many and caused several businesses large and small to close their doors for good. Nonetheless, venturing out has not been easy as states all over, such as Florida, continue to struggle with spikes in COVID 19 cases. Many states as Governor Northam said, were left to fight a biological war by themselves. Indeed, states were left without a true and clear national COVID 19 plan.

For the most part, we stay home as much as we can. We wear our masks and practice social distancing among other precautions. We have begun to venture out slowly to some of our old routines. In the spirit of good health: the gym is one of them. We first visited our old gym, re toured the facility, and reviewed their COVID 19 health measures. We mapped out our return and exercise plan. After asking a few follow up questions and getting a lay of the ‘new’ land so to speak we started back our old exercise regimen and have begun to work on our physical fitness again: what we believe is one of the 3 pillars of overall health (exercise, health (being disease free) and diet.

Have you begin to venture out? What do you do to stay safe from COVID 19? Will you take the vaccine when it comes out? Share the wealth of health with your friends and family by sharing this article with 3 people today. As always you are the best part of what we do. Keep sharing!

So its a pandemic and you decided to start your own garden or you have another reason for wanting to start your own garden. What do you do with the left over seeds you have? Where do you get seeds in the first place? If anyone remembers the Potato Famine and the devastation it caused because certain varieties of potatoes could not be grown, then the Seed Savers Exchange program makes a tremendous amount of sense. In the wake of a pandemic, there is no better time to be reminded that pro-action can save a lot of lives as well as heart ache. That is why we are particularly fond of this Exchange and the work they are doing. What do you feel is important to preserve? Why? What kind of impact can it have on your life or your neighbors life? Gardening during a Pandemic

Green Roma Tomato Shidonna Raven Garden and Cook

During World War II food rationing was introduced in the United States, prompting Americans to grow their own fruits and vegetables in order to sustain themselves during tough times. It’s estimated that by 1944, roughly 20 million victory gardens were grown, resulting in 8 million tons of food. That’s was about 40 percent of the country’s supply of fresh produce at the time!

Though we are currently not experiencing a food shortage crisis, being self sufficient and resourceful at a time when essentials (honestly, where is the garlic?) are frequently sold out at grocery stories, isn’t a bad thing. Plus, are we all looking for a new hobby during quarantine?

We used this book when starting our own garden.

During uncertain times being proactive and not waiting for the next crisis to hit is a good idea. Indeed staff at garden centers and nurseries have reported an increase in those purchasing garden supplies. People have several of their own reasons for starting a garden and the pandemic seems to be chief among them. What do you need to get your own garden started? What is your reason for starting your own garden? What do you do differently now since the pandemic? Share your comments with the community by posting them below.
