How is the Garden?

Pumpkin Flower

We always get the question: how is the garden? It is becoming a regular series around here. As most gardeners will say I will check back with you on the plant. Plants may take time to grow but when they do things can change quickly. My father is looking forward to a few pumpkin pies and we hope to deliver. We have a few fall babies around here so pumpkin is one of the most popular and exciting plants we have. Initially we though that only one was planted. But, sure enough two have sprouted and it is going to be tight in the garden. We believe that the pumpkins will be a beautiful addition to the backyard.

Both pumpkin plants have flowers in bloom, which means fruit should follow soon. The flowers are gorgeous and we would love to pick them, but we do not want to interrupt the pollination process. We also got the Parsley herb plant outside in a container and it is doing very well. Initially when we harvested Dill we cut all the leaves. We have since learned how to properly harvest most herbs. It is important to cut only a third of the leaves and to leave the rest to continue to photosynthesize for the rest of the plant. She is now doing well and should last for a few years. Thank you for taking this journey with us. What are your favorite herbs to cook with? Why? Post a comment and tell us which herb(s) you like best and what you cook with it. Have you started growing your own kitchen herb? Great! Send us a few pictures. We would love to share them with the community. Share your comments with the community by posting them below. Harvesting Parsley

Harvesting Parsley

Yesterday we harvested Parsley from the garden and garnished a vegetable and lamb stir fry dish with it. Parsley stole the show! Are you ready to harvest your own kitchen or outdoor garden herb? It is recommended that you only harvest a third of your herb plants so the plant’s leaves can continue to photosynthesize and grow more leaves for harvest. What did you learn about harvesting? Not ready to harvest yet? Share your comments with the community by posting them below. Share the wealth of health with your friends and family by sharing this article with 3 people today. How is the Garden?

Parsely

Harvest Parsley

Parsley has been doing very well, so we cut a few stems to encourage growth. Our Parsley plant is not as full as we would like it and it is recommended to only harvest about a third of your plant so it can continue to photosynthesize through its other leaves and keep growing. We harvested Dill several weeks ago and when we harvested the whole plant the plant had a difficult time regrowing leaves, so we think there is some truth to this. Mom will be adding this herb to her chicken and lamb wrap today. This is a great way to begin to introduce more fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits to your diet.

MiMi’s Plant Moves

Where we are, Norfolk, VA USA, the heat has been sweltering. One day we found MiMi’s plant completely slumped over. She had dropped all of her leaves in dehydration. We immediately gave her a big helping of water. That day was a hot day. We also had to take her out of direct sun light. It was just too much for her. She has bounced back beautifully. So, never give up on your plants! She lost a couple of leaves. We tried pulling but they will have to be cut because the roots are so deep. Deep roots is a good thing. She will soon need a new pot, which we have ready for her. We are so excited to see her bloom. This is a beautiful flower plant and a wonderful addition to our home. She definitely brightens up the place and sends us good plant vibes as plants do. We can not thank MiMi and Mom enough for bringing a little joy around our home. Mom has grown very partial to the plant as well. She watches her carefully and waters her also. Getting involved with the plants is addictive and easy to do. Be careful once you have one before you know it you will have another.

Over the last several weeks we have been learning a lot about health and food. We are glad you have been enjoying it as much as we have. We have a few surprises in the garden we can not wait to share with you. It is a lot of work, but we think it is well worth it. What plants did you think were going to perish on you but survived? Did you know you should clip dead leaves to encourage plant health and beauty? Have you considered growing Parsley as your first kitchen plant? Saving Time in the Garden

Garden Sprayer

We do not have many big tools in our garden tool box but, we have a few key tools that have begun to save us a ton of time. The sprayer pictured above is holds a gallon. It pumps the air out of the container and you hold the lever down for a continuous spray powered by air pressure. The more pressure the more liquid sprayed. There are sieves to filter the liquid so, what you put in the container must be fairly liquid. For things that are less liquid like our ground pepper and water mix we use the water can. We can more than cover our garden space with 2 passes of the water can. The holes in the water can are larger and should be able to hold most mixtures you apply to your garden.

Besides watering the garden, we also fertilize on a regular basis. We have also been applying different mixtures to the soil and plants to discourage pests. You will find that your Organic Remedies are less processed than chemical remedies and, thus may require a water can or sprayer that can hold a less refined liquid.  Thus far the water can, oscillating sprinkler and sprayer are all we need to apply what we need to the garden as well as save time. The most expensive item was the water can because we opted for metal over plastic. There is always something to do in the garden so, anytime we can automate or save time in a manner that makes financial sense for our size garden we do so.

Did you know that you can use wooden paint stirrers to stake smaller plants? Do you know how to stake a plant? Read our article “Stake Holder” dated May 9, 2020 to learn more about staking. Curious as to how you can save time in your garden? Just Ask! Did you know that you can get globes that water your house plants as needed? All you do is fill the globe. Want to know more? Just Ask. As always you are the best part of what we do. Keep growing.
