The Affordability of Organic

It has been reported that a single person will spend on average about $30 more a month buying organic. How much could one spend a month on one medication? How much more a month could one spend on one dietary supplement? Not all farmers agree that the USDA standards are strict enough. Some farmers argue that the standards have been eroding to compensate for corporate industrial farmers who want to use the organic label. But, we know, as informed consumers who read Shidonna Raven Garden & Cook regularly, that not all ingredients have to be organic just because the label says organic. Some of the ingredients can be non organic. The next time you go to the grocery store read the label of 3 items you buy carefully. What did you learn about the food you buy? The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman has been essential to us in understanding how to buy food. It also helped us understand what our food should look, how it should be produced, processed and labeled. It also left us with concerns regarding transparency in the food industry and how our foods are labeled. In this day in age where scientists seem to be making more contributions to food production and processing than farmers, Eliot’s book reminds us that the growth, not production, of food is a biological process that begins in the soil not a scientific process that begins in a lab. When we look at many of our foods and the additives as well as preservatives in them, we can see there is a reason to be concerned about the things we are knowingly or unknowingly consuming. Eliot’s book is the beginning of understanding and knowledge of food and how science has taken food production away from this biological process.

To understand how to buy food appropriately we must first begin by reading our food labels and asking questions regarding the foods we buy. How were they grown and processed? Where do they come from? An interesting point to note is that farmers typically grow food in the ground while scientists often create “food” in laboratories. Food products that you find on the shelf can include “foods” created in a science lab rather than on a farm or garden naturally. The interesting thing about food production is how transparent it is not when you are looking at your food and their labels in the grocery store. Within our articles we focus tremendously on health and how your diet contributes to health. As many of us know Luther Vandeross struggled for many years with his weight. You will find that many healthy people are very lean and fit, similar to Barack Obama’s build. It wasn’t until Luther began to incorporate exercise with diet that he began to not only lose weight, but he kept it off and felt great about it. While we are not here to necessarily help anyone lose weight, we do hope that a proper diet will promote your good health. Furthermore, we believe you’re your overall health is enhanced when you incorporate regular exercise in your regular habits.

So, we thought we would be remiss not to mention exercise here within our articles. We went over to Mayo Clinic for further clarity on the matter. According to May Clinic, “exercise means being more physically active. Although people appropriately focus on diet when they’re trying to lose weight, being active also is an essential component of a weight-loss program. When you’re active, your body uses energy (calories) to move, helping to burn the calories you take in with food you eat.”

As we look at the calories we take in via food, by looking at our food labels, we can see how this has a direct coloration on our weight. When my aunt discovered that she was getting close to becoming a diabetic, she looked seriously at both her diet and her exercise, or lack thereof, routine and made some changes. Her doctors made many recommendations. When it came to exercise, she had to begin slowly and where she was at. She essentially went from the exercise she got during her daily house chore routine to making it a little more invigorating. Regardless of where you are, you can begin to introduce exercise into your regular routine and your overall health strategy.

For one, Organic Consumers are health conscious. The Pew Research Center (Science & Society) reported that “Americans’ appetite for organic foods has grown steadily over the past few decades. According to the Economic Research Service, retail sales of organic foods more than doubled from 1994 to 2014 with a steady uptick of about 10% annual growth in retail sales over the past several years. Almost surely, a driver of this trend is people’s health concerns. Most Americans believe organic produce is better for one’s health than conventionally grown produce. Whether the science lines up behind this belief is less clear. Organic farming typically eliminates the use of conventional pesticides and fertilizers and, as a result, organic fruits, vegetables and grains have substantially lower levels of pesticides. At least one recent meta-analysis, reviewing the results of more than 340 studies, found that on average, organic foods also have higher levels of antioxidants. But having more antioxidants is not sufficient for foods to be more nutritious and there is considerable scientific debate over whether organic foods provide a nutritional boost when compared with eating conventionally grown foods.”

How to buy Organic?

Read our article “Certified Organic” to learn more about how organic food is labeled and produced. Essentially there are 2 categories of organic. Those who are exempt from being certified and those who must be certified in order to bear the USDA Certified label. The USDA has a strict certification process, which oversees the certification of the products that carry its seal. How you feel about these standards is another thing. We have found them to be fairly sound thus far. The labels that make organic clams can do so, but are also regulated by the USDA and can be fined for not following Organic Regulations. These labels cannot carry the USDA seal but can label their products as organic and must follow the USDA regulations to do so.
