Harvesting Dill

Dill Plant Shidonna Raven Garden and Cook

Dill was one of the plants we began early in February in our mini greenhouse aka our garage. She struggled for a while and was re-sown a few times. Eventually, dill was put outside away from the other greenhouse plants because she, along with several other plants, showed risk of disease. To prevent disease from spreading to other plants in the greenhouse we placed dill outside on the back porch in the fresh air where disease would be discouraged more given the limitations of our particular greenhouse.

She started to show some promise by sporting a couple of leaves. We then repotted her and moved her to the front porch where we could keep a closer eye on her and further away from insects. She began to flourished. She just loved being outdoors on the porch. Dill seems to be a perfect container, urban or kitchen plant. She has done very well in her pot. So, much so we could not resist harvesting a few leaves for a shrimp and lemon cream sauce dish. We used a few leaves as garnish.

We learned a few lessons while harvesting. Because herbs like dill can only be harvested at about a third at a time, it is best to plant several plants or 3 times as much as you would want to harvest at one time. How is the Garden

The Garden is progressing very well. MiMi’s flower has grown pretty big. She out grew another pot and will probably out grow this one too. We are thinking of just getting a pillar. She really wants to be in the ground. But, we will see how we do with the pot for now. She has come a long way from a small little seed in a little bucket a few inches tall to a ma-mouth pot that looks great on the front porch. We recently moved a few plants from the back porch to the front porch (oregano, dill and chives). We put these plants in bigger pots hoping to give their roots more space to spread out and grow up. We also have echinacea on the front porch that went into a bigger pot. We freshened up cilantro hoping a few more seeds will sprout filling out cilantro’s bunch. And Parsley is doing just great and is absolutely delicious.

We also harvested some parsley from the garden and placed it into some water until we cook it. We believe that we have “Korean Lettuce”. It has grown into a full grown plant. And the cayenne pepper has one full pepper on its plant. One pepper is all you need with cayenne so, that is good. We know a few people who like it hot. Do you? How is the Garden?

We always get the question: how is the garden? It is becoming a regular series around here. As most gardeners will say I will check back with you on the plant. Plants may take time to grow but when they do things can change quickly. My father is looking forward to a few pumpkin pies and we hope to deliver. We have a few fall babies around here so pumpkin is one of the most popular and exciting plants we have. Initially we though that only one was planted. But, sure enough two have sprouted and it is going to be tight in the garden. We believe that the pumpkins will be a beautiful addition to the backyard.

Both pumpkin plants have flowers in bloom, which means fruit should follow soon. The flowers are gorgeous and we would love to pick them, but we do not want to interrupt the pollination process. We also got the Parsley herb plant outside in a container and it is doing very well. Initially when we harvested Dill we cut all the leaves. We have since learned how to properly harvest most herbs. It is important to cut only a third of the leaves and to leave the rest to continue to photosynthesize for the rest of the plant. She is now doing well and should last for a few years.
